Knoll’s Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Compacts are Shortlisted

It was announced that Knoll Packaging has been shortlisted for 3 Pentawards, including Penhaligon's British Tales Luxury Collection for Sustainable Design - Luxury goods, MAC Holiday 2022 Advent Carousel Calendar for Limited Edition, and Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp Compacts for Professional conceptual work - Sustainable design. These shortlisted projects showcase Knoll’s achievements with FSC Paper & Board, and Knoll Ecoform molded pulp. The awards will be announced at the annual gala in November.

The MAC Carousel is an engineering marvel for a FSC Paper & Board box, which spins seamlessly without a plastic component. The Penhaligon’s British Tales Luxury coffret features a Knoll Ecoform exterior and paper insert, an industry-first for its use of materials. Lastly, it’s a privilege for our Knoll Ecoform molded pulp compacts, which have taken over two years of research and development, to be recognized by the Pentawards. This design started as a pie-in-the-sky goal to utilize our experience with molded pulp to create a make-up compact that would be accepted by the luxury market. It’s clear we’re on the right track, and each of these shortlisted projects celebrate our global engineering and innovation teams efforts to bring the unthinkable to life.”

ABOUT THE PROJECTS:

Shortlisted for Limited Edition, The MAC advent calendar is creative, playful, interactive, overall “wow factor”. The ability to spin is an engineering marvel that engages the customer and elicits a positive brand response. This package is designed to be a true keepsake. The structure is FSC Paper & Board to ensure material traceability and is wrapped with plastic free metalized paper which poses challenges in wrapping the round shape, which were expertly achieved. The rigid box contains 24 individual folding doors to safely secure the product. The interior of the box can be lifted out by the ribbon handle which makes the box a keepsake. The technical Innovations of the package included the cut outs on the circular round base and decoration. The most complex part was the visual and spinning mechanics of the box. The challenge with the door closures was to have enough friction due to die shape for the flaps to stay closed and that each cavity was wide enough to fit the different size products. The decorated metallized paper has a very distinct embossing and printing pattern that was meant to be seen and felt. The ribbon had specific requirements to appear as a bow and functions as a handle.

Shortlisted for Sustainable Design – Luxury Goods, The House of Penhaligon's partnered with Knoll Printing & Packaging to launch a new industry-first fragrance coffret that combines Knoll Ecoform molded pulp and FSC Paper and Board. The exterior of the set utilizes Knoll Ecoform molded pulp, which has been shaped to the iconic Penhaligon's bottle, and perfectly color matched to the Penhaligon's green with a smooth and luxury appearance to meet the brands DNA. The interior features an FSC Paper & Board platform, which securely holds eight 10ml Penhaligon's fragrant delights. The platform features an innovative pop-feature to retrieve each fragrance vial, while elegantly displaying the fragrance collection. The finishing touches include a uniquely British ribbon, which keeps the set closed and adds a bold pop of color, and a label that perfectly displays the name of this unique set. This is the first time Knoll Ecoform molded pulp and FSC Paper & Board have been engineered in this way, continuing Knoll Packaging's commitment to set a new standard for luxury sustainable packaging.

Shortlisted for Professional conceptual work - Sustainable design, Knoll spent 2 years on research and develop their 100% Knoll Ecoform molded pulp compacts. Knoll Ecoform is a plant material made from bamboo, wood and sugar cane fibers. The material is certified recyclable in the paper recycling stream, and can be molded, cut to order and color matched. This latest innovation can replace traditional plastic make-up compacts and is engineered with a magnet-free option and removable mirror. The compact utilizes two layers of molded pulp, which has a smooth luxury feel finish on the interior and exterior of the compact. The design is fully customizable to meet the aesthetic of a brand, including any configuration of pans. Additional decoration also includes embossing and stamping or adding a FSC paper mask for additional decoration. It is Knoll's goal to eliminate plastics from their supply chain, and this new molded fiber solution for compacts continues their mission to create a better world.

In 2022, Knoll Packaging won 2 Gold Pentawards for the Knoll Ecoform Chanel Advent Calendar in the Sustainable Design and Limited Edition categories.
